About Us

The Institute of Design Expression, Art and Learning (IDEAL) is an autonomous institute and was founded in 2003 by the Foundation of Art and Craft Expression, (FACE), a Charitable Trust, with the objective of providing an education in Art and Design in the relatively new age media of Glass, Wood and Fabric Design, Ornamentation and Usage.

The aim was to create an Institute which would provide a project based system of education thereby enabling the students to enhance their creative abilities while exploring these new medium using innovative and dynamic methods of study.

The Founder member of the Institute, Asha Mandapa, is the head of the Reflections Design Studio, Ahmedabad and a Related Professionals Affiliate of the Stained Glass Association of America.

Over the years a unique blend of media and technique has defined the work of The Reflections Design Studio (RDS).

Innovative and unusual designs coupled with meticulous attention to detail have built a wide client base for the studio both across the country and overseas. Each RDS site is planned and executed to the highest professional standards.

It is this commitment to quality and sound technical skill backed by years of practical application that the studio brings to IDEAL.

Since 1994, RDS has been involved with education in design and has been conducting workshops. Students from around the country attended these.
These workshops were designed to teach and train students to work with the new age media of Glass, Wood and Fabric.

Over the years the workshops evolved into highly integrated and intensive programmes. The practical 'hands on' approach of the workshop and the completeness of the modules created their own demand and virtually became a parallel line of activity for RDS.

The Genesis

It is out of this enthusiastic demand for the workshops that the idea of a more focused, substantial and regular training institute was born.
The programmes that IDEAL offers are specially structured to cater to students at an individual level.
This is possible because group sizes are restricted.
There is a healthy interchange of ideas between faculty and students of different disciplines. This promotes an awareness of the interdependence and inter-relation of these media with each other.
IDEAL focuses on developing visualization skills along with technical skills.
The 'Idealists' are expected to research and explore the world of art, to find and establish their own definite styles, in their chosen disciplines.
